Description:

Cure (1997) aka Kyua aka キュア, directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Criterion Collection 4k remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including original Japanese theatrical stereo, Japanese 5.1 remaster, commentary track, and English and French subtitles.

IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0123948/

Video encoded in two-pass 12.0 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image.

English subtitles OCRed, proofed and corrected. French subtitles converted to VobSub and repositioned.

Note : I had been curious about this one since first seeing Pulse, and holy shit, does it deliver. A relentlessly downbeat and depressing psychological horror story about a low-key existential threat told through the lens of a police procedural, the feeling of hopelessness it leaves you with up there with stuff like The Road. But it's also a hell of a creepy road to get there, too, with the main, near-supernatural story mixing with several bits of grim personal drama, and a matter-of-fact approach to grisly violence. Highly recommended for when you want to feel like shit.

Takabe is a police detective whose wife suffers from an unidentified mental condition reminiscent of early-onset Alzheimer's. He's tasked with investigating a series of mysterious murders committed by random people, whose particulars, down to speficic mutilation of the corpse, are identical, but none of the murderers can explain why they did it. When the police apprehend Mamiya, a young drifter with apparently extreme short-term memory loss who doesn't know basic facts about where he is or what day it is, but whose mere presence seems to induce people who come into contact with him to later kill, Takabe and his police psychologist colleague Sakuma try to unravel the mystery.

This is a good 4k remaster, I mostly just adjusted black levels slightly, although they were not at all as catastrophically bad as many Japanese films we've seen. Both the original stereo and the 5.1 both sound good. I've included the Japanese commentary track, although there are no subtitles for it, because subtitles may well pop up in the future.
