Note : Paul W.S. Anderson has had, shall we say, a pretty mixed career, but this, his second Hollywood film after Mortal Kombat, is definitely one of his best. A sci-fi horror set on a spaceship that studiously avoids Alien-like clichés for something more along the lines of a haunted house movie, a Shining in space, it mostly succeeds in creating a creeping dread, helped by a very nice visual design and some pretty good performances. It does have its flaws, mostly in characterization, where it does that thing where the writers clearly wanted tough, no-nonsense, badass characters, but instead managed to create a bunch of unlikeable assholes who are constantly viciously insulting each other and seem to have hair triggers for physical violence against their "friends". There's also a stereotypical "cool Black guy" of the kind that was common in the 90s. And finally, some of the physics in space here make no sense, but it's hardly the first or only film to fuck that up. Definitely worth a watch as a sci-fi horror that mostly works very well. It's also noteworthy that Warhammer 40k fans consider this film a sort of unofficial prequel, for reasons that will become obvious to anyone familiar with that property's ridiculous and complex lore.

A team of space salvage experts get sent on a secret mission to Neptune, with scientist Dr. Weir along for the ride. On the way, they're briefed that their mission is to salvage the Event Horizon, a research ship that mysterious disappeared years earlier, and has now just as mysteriously reappeared. Dr. Weir, the designer of the ship, reveals that the ship was a top-secret test platform for his warp drive, which uses a black hole to fold space. As the salvagers board the ship, they find it seemingly abandoned, then discover the mutilated corpses of a few of the crewmembers, just as one of their team gets sucked into the gravity drive, and re-emerges in a catatonic state. A mysterious energy surge disables their ship, and they have to take shelter on the Event Horizon as the situation deteriorates along with the mental state of the team members, who start suffering unsettling hallucinations as they desperately try to figure out what happened to the ship.

This Shout! Factory 4k remaster is very good, nice color, contrast, and detail, with reasonable grain, showing of the neat production design and moody cinematography. Some visual effects haven't aged that well, but it's nothing critical. Sound is also good, and the commentary track quite interesting.

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “hevk sci-fi horror” for more screaming in space, which is largely thought to be futile, “hevk horror” for more horror in general, or “hevk 90s” for more from the decade of early CGI and confused plots.
