Note : Here's an odd little gem, more talked about than see, which you as a horror fan should remedy immediately. It started out conceptually as a "Black vampire film" in the peak Blaxploitation era, but director Bill Gunn, well known as a playwright, had other plans, and turned it into an experimental piece, an allegory for addiction which also examined racial assimilation, organized religion, and power relationships. It doesn't have a whole lot of plot, but is more dream-like and impressionist. Also, it's the second of only two lead roles for Duane Jones, who you might remember from a little film called Night of the Living Dead.

The story, such as it is, concerns Hess Green, a wealthy Black anthropologist who is visited by his unstable assistant (played by the director). During the evening, the assistant tries to kill himself, but Hess talks him down, however, later at night the assistant attacks Hess and stabs him with an ancient ceremonial dagger from his extensive collection of artifacts. Believing he's murdered Hess, the assistant kills himself, but Hess mysteriously wakes up with his wound healed, and finds he now needs blood to live. Things later get complicated when Hess starts a relationship with the dead assistant's wife, who comes to look for him.

This film was considered lost for a long time, and was later reconstructed from the best available 35mm elements, which were, well, not great. This remaster seems to be a fairly faithful transfer from that imperfect copy, although it could have done with at least some digital cleanup, color matching, flicker removal and so on. Also, the aspect ratio changes at some points, but I've preserved the largest framing to not crop out anything. Still, it's not a film you watch for the image quality as such, and in many cases, the grainy, blown-out look fits the mood. The original mono track sounds ok, and the commentary is pretty extensive, though sadly doesn't include Gunn himself, who died in 1989, or Jones, who similarly passed away in 1988.

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “hevk vampire” for more drinking that sweet nectar of life, “hevk blaxploitation” for more films made for and by Black people, most of them less serious than this, or “hevk 70s” for more from the foremost decade of experimental genre film.
